A scientific research grant is managed by the Principal Investigator, or PI. In SBIR and STTR applications the PI often must be specified, and the choice of PI will influence the application’s likelihood of success.
The Principal Investigator is responsible for both the scientific success and the required administration of a research grant. Major research universities have administrative organizations to help PIs with the non-scientific aspects of grant project management, but responsibility remains with the PIs. This challenge is significant enough that a Principal Investigators Association has been formed to help PIs with the “other” aspects of the job.
